About the Movie

On its surface, the movie Happy Hour is about the relationships of four people, who happen to be in the same bar one night. However, to say the movie is simply about relationships doesn’t tell the whole story.

“I got the idea for the script when I was thinking about how people really don’t know each other,” says writer/director Kristen Henry. “The old saying about having to ‘walk a mile in their shoes’ is true, and I think a lot of the time, there are miscommunications when people don’t consider where the other person is coming from. They hear the words and interpret them from their own point of view, instead of trying to understand the meaning of the person who said them.”

“And that is actually true for every person we meet and every situation we are in. As human beings, we bring our own life experience, expectations and perceptions into the mix and it clouds our judgment and prevents us from seeing the truth of the matter sometimes.”

Entertaining this thought, Kristen came up with the idea of writing a script where four people of different ages, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds all interacted in a bar. At the start, both the characters and the audience would assume certain things, but then – through flashbacks – the truth of their situations and the circumstances that brought them out that night would be revealed. “The reality is that I also really wanted to try and write a non-linear script, since I love non-linear stories that keep the audience guessing and make you think while you’re watching the movie. And I also wanted to try my hand at some real character development, since writing short scripts for school didn’t really allow for that.”
